Raising product standards for household tumble dryers
Consultation description
This consultation seeks views on:
- changing the ecodesign requirements for household tumble dryer products
- increasing the minimum energy performance standard
- updating the energy labels for tumble dryers placed on the GB market
It sets out proposals to:
- raise the Minimum Energy Performance Standards of household tumble dryers being sold on the GB market. This will phase out less efficient air-vented, gas-fired and condenser household tumble dryers and enable only the most efficient heat pump household tumble dryers. They also set stricter requirements on products when in off-mode or standby mode
- raise the minimum condensation efficiency standards to 80%, which will protect consumers from products which have a risk of causing damp and mould, and will reduce potential structural damage to buildings
- a range of circular economy measures to promote repair and maintenance for end-users and to incentivize resource efficiency in the design and manufacturing of household tumble dryers. This includes improvements to the technical documentation provided tom consumers, as well as new requirements on the availability of spare parts
- improve product labelling standards to ensure energy labels best inform consumer choices. This involves reforming the current household tumble dryers energy efficiency, condensation efficiency scales, and introducing a new acoustic airborne noise emission and repairability index scale
- align with EU regulations on household tumble dryers
We have also published Options Assessments and a draft Statutory Instrument alongside this consultation.
